Athletic Sports 2011

We had a fantastic day at athletic sports last week. Great kids, great fun and everyone doing their very best! King took out the house relay in a thrilling race. As usual Muritai TV was on the spot.

Since then our year 4-6 team have competed with distinction at the central zones coming second by one point! Well done all.

Battle of the Bands 2011

Our very popular rock band..."People of the Future" performed at the Battle of the Bands 2011 recently in Masterton. The team had a whale of a time and played superbly in a very hotly contested competition. Well done Gus, Rupert, Harry, Jared, Sam, Lily and Lucy, and a big thanks to Steve Wren for his coaching and Carl McRae for movie production.

Wearable Arts 2011

Charter Consultation

Our Board of Trustees are beginning the consultation process for our school charter. This is a big process but will set the strategic direction for the next few years. We are keen to hear from our school community on their contributions to the discussion about Muritai School towards 2017. Muritai TV interviewed Board of Trustee member Craig Griffiths on how it is going to work and what this all means.

Peer Mediation

This year we have introduced Peer Mediation into the school. Led by Stu Devenport and his year 6 team, staff and students have been trained in the processes of peer mediation. Two mediators are on duty at any one time in the playground and if children have a problem with another person or need to talk through a relationship breakdown then the mediators are only too happy to help. Our mediation team are very proud of the difference they have made this year at Muritai and we are very proud of their leadership and contribution to our school.

Eco–Housing Projects

This term the Senior School have been exploring the concept of ‘Sustainability’ with a focus on:

Creating a sustainable future by raising peoples awareness of the impact human’s and human practices are having on our planet.

At the conclusion of this unit students had to explore, then design their own eco houses. This movie shows the result of the student's hard work.

This documentary was created as part of the Senior School's current unit. The focus of this unit is:

Creating a sustainable future by raising peoples awareness of the impact human’s and human practices are having on our planet.

As part of this unit we have been investigating eco-systems. As an extension activity some of our students were given the task of creating the next instalment of David Attinborough series ‘The Blue Planet’ For this episode the students headed inland to explore the bush area behind Muritai's Senior School.

Ready, Steady, Cook!

Last week six lucky Year 7s and 8s ventured to Blue Carrot Catering in Petone to learn the tricks of the cheffing trade. Under the tutelage of Head Chef Adrian Hornsby, these kids are aiming to be the chefs who will cook at the end of the year's Art Aucton. Money raised will go to future gardening projects at Muritai.

Thank you so much Blue Carrot Catering for giving your time, produce and premises to spark a love of food and cooking in these young ones. They simply loved it and have begun cooking at home for their family.

Rocket Testing - Round 1

During this Term the Year 3 and 4 children have been learning all about flight. We have been experimenting and learning about the four forces of flight; THRUST, LIFT, WEIGHT and DRAG. To finish our unit of learning we designed our own rockets out of a plastic bottle. The plastic bottles fit perfectly on a home made rocket launcher which creates the THRUST for the rockets.

Last Friday we fired our rockets for the first time in a Scientific Fair Test. Rosie's from Room 10 went so far that it is still stuck 3 quarters of the way up a huge Norfolk Pine on Muritai Road. We measured it went 52 metres, but because it curved in the air and headed toward the Senior School, it could have gone a lot further if it went straight. Noah Stock's Rocket flew long and straight, plunging into the ground 82 METRES from the launch site.

Room 1 at Weltec

Room 1 had a fantastic time at Weltec recently. With the big students out and about, Mrs Ryan's class were invited to go and have a look at what the 'big' students experience in their learning by observing the technology and science in action at Weltec. You can see that this was an eye opening experience for the children.

How do you make COMPOST?

Compost is very important in a vege garden. It is something you add to soil for plants to eat so they grow big and strong...and yummy.

They found out that some of the main ingredients in compost are:

Dry leaves, green leaves, grass clippings and food scraps.

PROBLEM!!! We have lots of food scraps but not enough leaves or grass clippings. Where oh where could we find leaves??? ......................................... ???????

Finally, after much deliberation, these kids thought of Mark the caretaker who seems to have a lot of leaves at his disposal everyday.

So, the gardeners sat down with him in the library, joined forces and made a plan for Mark to put the leaves and any grass clippings from around the school into the food scrap bin or directly into the compost bin. Now we can make loads of compost to feed the plants.

2011 Year 3 and 4 Cross Country

At last the Year 3s and 4s got to run their Cross Country. The kids have been training for the last 7 weeks, running laps of the school each morning with the aim to be the best runners they can be.

Mr Skilton organised an excellent and varied track. The children got to run around Bishop's Park, over the sand dunes, down the beach and back through the park past the roaring crowd. There certainly some very strong runners and everyone impressed the crowd with their efforts and perserverence.

WELL DONE TO ALL YEAR 3s and 4s FOR GIVING IT YOUR ALL!!!

A New Enviro Project at Muritai

Forest Lakes Photo Story 2011

Our year 5 and 6 team had a wonderful four days at Forest Lakes. Interspersed between a variety of activities such as horse riding, kayaking, archery, rafting, orienteering, photography, mudslide, waterslide and tent pitching; was the beautiful one day tramp through the Mangaone Valley. It truly was a wonderful experience. Each day children and parents capture images of the camp in action. Muritai TV has cobbled them together for you all to enjoy.

The Christchurch Earthquake

We have 11 students from Christchurch attending Muritai at the moment after the earthquake made their homes and schools uninhabitable in the interim. In room 10, Mr Ray's year 4 class, our children interviewed Riley and Logan on what it is like in Christchurch at the moment and what it is like being in an earthquake of that size.

Red and Black Day

The tragic circumstances surrounding the earthquake in Christchurch spurred our charity organisers into action to hold a 'Red and Black day' to raise money for the Christchurch relief fund. Room 11 teacher Karen Chao also made two sock puppets to be raffled. Everyone got into the spirit of it all and together we were able to raise around $2400 for the people of Christchurch.

Senior School Art week

Muritai Kapa haka roopu

We are very proud of our kapa haka group at Muritai School. Raihania Chadwick has tuned them up nicely over the last couple of years and they have made great progress. Here is their performance at Maungaraki School, one of four in seven days! Many of you won't have had the opportunity to see them in action - I am sure you won't be disappointed. The set takes 8 minutes so it is quite a big file - it may take a while to load.

Kia Jewell - Our Ballet Dancer

Whacky Hair for Ferndale

Recently after the earthquake in Christchurch, Ferndale School, a school for children with disabilities was broken into and much of their ICT equipment was stolen. We felt this was a real shame and wanted to make a difference for them. Mr. Chadwick challenged the community that if we raised $1000 he would cut of his dreadlocks (after 9 years). We raised over $1200 for the kids at Ferndale, thanks to many parent donations, our children and Kadima furniture. Thanks to Claire from Chocolate Hair for making Mr. Chadwick respectable! The Life of Riley

Someone once coined the phrase "schools should be the best party in town". While I don't necessarily agree that school days are party days, from time to time we really have a great deal of fun at Muritai. Our annual production is one such occasion. This year our staff, led by Kirsten Berry, have adapted Colin Thompson's story... 'The Short but Incredibly Happy Life of Riley' into a whole school show. We are very proud of it.

Emily's visit to Kenya

We are a large school of over 400 children. From time to time some of our children get to have very unique experiences in their family lives. Emily is one of those children. Her father is part of the Global Volunteer Network and Emily joined the group when they travelled to Kenya recently to work alongside some orphanages. Emily also does speech and drama as a hobby and so we have combined her love of speech with her love of wanting to make a difference in the world. This is Emily's story!

NZ Ballet visits Muritai

This week we were privileged to host the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company at our school. We were blown away from the experience and were amazed at the dancers skill, strength, poise and grace. Muritai Tv took the chance to film and find out some things about the life of the Ballet company and its dancers. Duathalon

Recently our junior school held a Duathalon which was a lot of fun. The children were separated into different groups in their year groups and then had to run around the school and then bike a course. The children gave it their all and it was a neat experience. Each year for the last 9 years Muritai has managed to perform in the dance show of the ArtSplash festival at the Michael Fowler Centre. This year room 14 had the honour of representing our school with their 'Bollywood' dance. Tutored by trainee teacher Sabeshan Gnanum (Mr G) the children were superb - well drilled, confident and very proud. Thank you to the big team that made this happen. I was a wee way away but the footage captured the hard work the children and teacher's put in for a neat performance...enjoy...

40 Hour Famine

Muritai School is a loyal supporter of the World Vision 40 hour famine. This year Muritai TV interviewed some of the children who took part and found out what they sacrificed to raise money for the children in need. Sarah also interviewed Mrs Chao about organizing the event and what the money will be used for. We raised over $1800 overall which is one of our best ever efforts!

Rain - Poetry to Music (from 2005)

I found this blast from the past in my cupboard the other day. It is a copy of a project that the year 8 students of 2005 did in Stephen Eames class in 2005. Sophie, Georgia, Frankie and Rosie produced a 'music video' with Sophie singing an adaptation of Hone Tuwhare's poem 'Rain'. These girls were very talented and Sophie would have to have had one of the most exquisite voices ever to have been at Muritai School. It is great to see that she has continued with her talent. When you view this it is hard to believe that these girls were only 12 when they put this together. This learning experience was based around the children's visit to a performance in town of Hone Tuwhare poems that celebrated the release of an album where NZ musicians transposed his poems into music. This 'video' was put together using Imovie, garageband and a garden hose with Sophie Mackie on vocals and shot around Eastbourne.

Goodbye Miss Ghandi

Mid year reporting

With the help of the Muritai TV team we are able to share with you how the mid year reporting process will unfold. Sofija interviewed our principal Andrew Bird on the differences and the purposes of 2010 reporting processes. Key questions involve the new national standards, how teachers work out how a student is achieving and what parents should be looking for from the 3 main reporting tools - report, interview and portfolio. Please note we filmed last week so written reports now go out tomorrow!

Dune Planting in Robinson's Bay

Some of our Enviroteam took part in planting in the dune at Robinsons' Bay. With Caroline from HCC and David from the Eastbourne Dunes Restoration group our children contributed the hard labour to help beautify this section of the beach. The children were motivated to enhance this area as it is where where the little blue penguins nest. It is all about our children playing their part in the community. Gina - Eastbourne Youth Worker

Our Eastbourne Youth Worker is Gina Sinclair. She has been in our village since the beginning of the year and really connected with our year 7-8 children. She regularly visits the senior school at lunchtimes and takes some children for indoor soccer at the community centre on Thursday afternoons. many of the children join her and her team at Youth Club on Friday nights. Alana and Ashleigh wanted to find out what makes up our friendly youth worker.

Vacuum Shoes

Some of our children do amazing things outside of school. Oscar is ten years old and spends some of his spare time inventing things. He brought one of his inventions - 'the vacuum shoes' to school to share with his class. This invention could potentially change the way we vacuum our floors. We had to capture this wonderful idea on film and so Grayden asked him some questions about how he became an inventor and where he gets his ideas from!

Enviroschools

Muritai School is an Enviroschool green/gold school. This significant achievement was reached last year as we met a highly rigorous assessment process to become a green/gold school. The challenge for Muritai now is maintaining the momentum of environmental sustainability. One option we are taking is our first Muritai TV 'series'. Maddy, Kenzy and Ryan are producing a series that backgrounds the environmental education programme at Muritai School. Their first episode focusses on the senior school garden.

Heart Jam

Yesterday our Junior School participated in a nationwide jump jam fundraiser called Heart Jam, raising money for children with heart ailments. This gave them an opportunity to have an extra long session of jump jam. The perfect thing to do at the end of a wet and horrible week. Nice to see the jump jam leadership group - Maddy, Hailey, Matty, Xanthe and Elspeth up on stage, leading the way and the footage shows that sometimes getting out of class and having a go at something is good for the soul.

Trainee teachers at Muritai

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Leah Thompson, Elizabeth Radich and Sabe Gnanam at Muritai for the last 6 weeks. They finish up this Friday and we will be sad to see them go - they have all made quite an impression and will be very good teachers. Verity and Ashleigh caught up with them and wanted to find out if they have enjoyed their time at Muritai, why they chose teaching as a profession and who inspired them the most at school when they were little. Ryan has done all the technical things, including our first use of two cameras! Of course there are some extra scenes at the end!

French at Muritai School

Tous les mercredis M. Bird batailles avec la langue française tente d'inspirer les élèves du secondaire à devenir locuteurs de cette langue romantique en 6 semaines. Cette fois, nous avons terminé notre session par la cuisson des crêpes et en utilisant une caméra à partager avec d'autres certaines des choses que nous avions appris.

Every Wednesday Mr Bird battles with the French language and tries to inspire senior school pupils into becoming fluent speakers of this romantic language in 6 weeks. This time we finished our session by cooking crepes and using a movie camera to share with others some of the things we had learned. Georgia popped over to the main school to teach some of our younger children how to say how old they are; while some of the students got all arty and went to the cinema! Look out for our caretaker Mark, who happened to walk past the classroom during filming and the bloopers (of which there were plenty!)

Bollywood at Muritai

From time to time we host trainee teachers. One of our current trainees is Sabeshan Gnanam, who is working in room 14 under the guidance of Lisa Allen and Ruth Hooke, (and with a really great group of year 5-6 kids!). We encourage all our teachers to share some of their personal skills and talents with their children and with only 6 weeks at Muritai, Sabe has the right attitude to share one of his strengths - dance.

The kids know Sabe as Mr G and clearly he has a bright future in teaching. We are all enjoying watching room 14 evolve in their Bollywood dance experience. We all hope their efforts are rewarded as they work towards performance day.

Sofija and Zoe popped in to see what all the noise was all about, in the hall at 1.30 on a Wednesday afternoon!

Life on a boat

Often people comment about a lack of diversity amongst our children at Muritai School. This is changing as we have an increasing cultural diversity amongst our children as people join Eastbourne from overseas. We also have children who share different personal circumstances which adds to each pupils individuality. An example of this is shown by two of our pupils - Grayden and Kahlia O'Connor, who live on a boat at the Seaview Marina. Grayden absolutely loves it and shared his story about where he lives and the boat he calls home.

Whacky Hair Day

Mosaic

As part of the senior school landscaping project school Ellen Giggenbach and Nancy Barclay have produced a stunning mosaic that now holds pride of place at the entranceway. Designed by teacher Kirsten Berry the project took 2 weeks to complete and Nancy and Ellen had lots of help from our senior students.

Year 5-6 camp at Forest Lakes

Stu Devenport has put together a short movie from the recent year 5-6 EOTC camp at Forest Lakes. It is an excellent example of why these camps are so important with the emphasis on children being challenged outside of the classroom. Four days away from home seemed to fly by and the movie shows how much the children enjoyed the experience.

Thank you to the very big team involved - the children, the large parent support group, the hard working staff and Stu Devenport who led the organisation of the 'Forest Lakes experience".

Year 3-4 swimming sports

The year 3-4 team had a very enjoyable swim carnival at Eastbourne Pool last week. It was a little cloudy - tricky for an outdoor pool- but it didn't deter the children from trying their best.

Thank you to the teaching team - Richard, Sarah, Karen, Hayden, Vita and Matt; and their parent helpers - for creating such a lovely atmosphere where the children could be challenged and display their skills and talents.

Swimming Sports

Last Thursday Muritai TV covered our annual swim sports at Huia Pool. It was a fantastic day with lots of quality swimming, lots of effort and lots of children trying to be the best that they can be. Strike visit Muritai School
